Opportunity.

Timing.

Upbringing.

Effort.

Meaningful work.

Legacy.

These six elements are rather powerful.

Do the successful have to work the hardest or do they have the best luck?

In the award-winning book Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcom Gladwell examines scientific data and evidence from well-known success stories to answer the question of what makes a person successful. Through this stunning book, we will take an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful and question ourselves about what makes high-achievers different?

This is a high school ½ credit English semester. Students will participate in pre-reading, analyzing and post-reading discussions. Students will write essays as well as have some quizzes and a mid-term and final.

NOTE: Registration deadline is August 26, 2019.

It is rarely possible to bring world class guest speakers in to school to lecture students about their chosen field of expertise. It is, however, easy to bring their ideas and their passions direct to your students. This is what this class is all about!

In Ten Terrific Ted Talks, we are going to watch, discuss, analyze and debate various topics that are presented in ten amazing Ted Talks*. This class will combine psychology, social sciences, writing, current events and more! It is a discussion-based class so please make sure your child comes to class prepared to talk!

PLEASE NOTE: Some of the language in the TED TALKS might not be the “normal classroom language” that I use during class. There might be some “foul language” and/or “inappropriate language”. Please make sure your child understands that I do not teach or use this language. The TED TALKS are other people’s words.

*TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages.

NOTE: Registration deadline is December 30, 2019.

What is a start-up? Is it a full-fledged business? Is it an idea? Is it both?

Israel is considered by the world the start-up nation and more products and designs began their life in Israel. Jonathan Meola has been a part of this world in one capacity or another for a large part of his adult life. He is excited to share with students the concept behind start-ups.

What is a start-up?

How do you come up with the next great idea?

How do you get investors?

What happens when you sell the start up?

Introduction to Start Ups is so much more than just a business class. Entrepreneurial education is slowly but surely becoming more mainstream. It is a class to inspire, make your move, fulfill your vision, look at your goal. Yes, you can be the Startup Hero!

NOTE: Registration deadline is April 6, 2020.
