In this course, we will explore how architects and engineers think about cities and design the spaces you visit every week. Over the course of the ten weeks, students will be challenged to design a city where each student contributes one neighborhood, articulating their rationale for essential structures to ensure livability. The class begins by defining cities, urbanization, and livability. In addition to considering these topics abstractly, students will observe their city in action to develop stronger definitions. From these basic definitions, students begin to visualize their own city. Working collaboratively, students will address infrastructure and zoning challenges. The class will work together to craft a livability index that ensures all residents of their ideal city can expect high livability.Due to the nature of this course, it is hosted on the Zoom platform. The instructor will email you before the start of the course about downloading the free software, so students can join the meeting. Just as all other classes at OTA, you will be provided a link in Canvas that directs students to the meeting. After each meeting is finished, the instructor will post a link to the class recording. If you have any questions, please email the instructor at lindsey@opportunityunlocked.com.

Instructor: Lindsey Nelson

Grade Range: 6th - 10th

A minimum of 5 students must enroll for this class to be held.

In this class, we look at the real engineering stories of everyday objects around us. We will practice making careful observations of form and function, reflecting on how people interact with the object, and noticing how objects work together. Each week features a new spotlight object where students are encouraged to suggest spotlight objects for a truly student-centered experience. Additionally, students will undertake a related engineering design project or science experiment weekly. This class is offered for learners in grades 3-6 and is especially well-suited to the needs of gifted and twice-exceptional learners. Younger students will investigate the stories found in Mistakes that Worked: 40 Familiar Inventions and How They Came to Be.Due to the nature of this course, it is hosted on the Zoom platform. The instructor will email you before the start of the course about downloading the free software, so students can join the meeting. How do engineers change the world? In this class, we will explore the contributions made by different fields of engineering using diverse hands-on projects that get the students truly thinking. Together we will explore how mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineers solve problems while analyzing complex objects we use every day. This class is ideal for students considering engineering careers who love hands-on learning. We will focus on engineering design, touching briefly on science concepts as necessary.Due to the nature of this course, it is hosted on the Zoom platform. Have you ever wondered how inventors bring their ideas to life? In this class, young engineers will use the engineering design process to create an invention that solves a problem. Additionally, they will learn true stories of other young inventors that have changed the world.Every class highlights a part of the invention process to support young inventors bringing their ideas to life. We constantly pull from real-world examples so that students see how abstract ideas like “brainstorming” manifest in authentic engineering practice. Students focus on one large project over the term so that they can gain experiences with best practices in engineering design.Due to the nature of this course, it is hosted on the Zoom platform.
