The letters of the alphabet are the building blocks of our language and our ability to communicate. The ABCs are so familiar to us that we take them almost for granted. Did you know that for most of human history people didn't know how to communicate through writing, and that even once writing started to progress, it would take thousands of years for the alphabet as we know it to develop? We will examine each letter as an entire world onto itself, and trace its development from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, to the Phoenicians sea merchants who turned these hieroglyphic pictographs into letters. From there our alphabetic quest will take a detour to the Hebrew alphabet which developed the letters even further, and to the ancient Greek and Latin scripts which added their own unique elements. The class delves into the origins of each letter as it explores is symbolic, linguistic, numeric and philosophical significance. We will also be taking a look at how artists have used the letters of the alphabet for artistic inspiration. Each lesson will culminate with a creative writing and an artistic assignment which will form the building blocks of the end year project; our very own unique alphabet books.

In this class, your students will learn (and hopefully master) the parts of speech that will help them lay the foundation for further learning of the English Language. Together each week, we will explore another part of speech while incorporating singing, game playing, art, video making, power point creating, parsing and diagramming. As we progress through the weeks, emphasis will be placed on reviewing the concepts already taught to ensure mastery.
