Jan also taught full-time in the classroom at three schools, instructing students from K-2 through 3rd grade. At the brick and mortar schools, she taught everything from pre-Latin and English/Grammar to Math and Science and all subjects in between. She has a passion for teaching many subjects to children and finding unique ways to do so in the online environment. Jan has a passion for the subjects that she teaches – Basic Paragraph Writing, Basic Essay Writing, Introductory Geography, Zoology, Introductory Marine Biology and Latin and Greek Roots.
Jan’s other passion is in the world of journalism. She worked as a broadcast journalist in her early years before progressing to newspaper journalism, marketing and public relations. She is an award-winning journalist and a published author of two books. In addition, Jan also taught adult career and job readiness classes for a few years.
Jan is a graduate of Troy University with a bachelor’s degree in communications. She also began her master’s program in collaborative education before family tragedy led her to end that process.
Jan is certified in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and currently works as an online ESL instructor for DaDaABC. She has taught more than 1,200 ESL classes online in addition to her classes at OTA. She also private tutors elementary and middle school students one-on-one.
Jan’s husband of 33 years passed in June 2017. Her children are currently 21 and 24 and are successful in their careers and lives. She lives in Alabama with her four dogs—Buddy, Russia, Chip and Bailey. Two cats, Tater and Fluffy, along with six rabbits—Sir Humphrey Von Thumpington, Miss Bun Bunz, Scout, OIivia, Sable and Kiowa--round out the Murray zoo (oops, home!).
Finally, when not teaching online, Jan enjoys writing for an area newspaper as a freelance journalist and going to Panama City Beach for sand, and reading.
