It is imperative that students, with the goal of attending college, can write basic essays with ease, speed and confidence. In this class using the IEW Writing philosophy , your child will become well-versed in the structure and application of expository, persuasive, compare/contrast and personal essays, which are found on most applications and scholarship forms for college, competitive summer programs and high school admission. Students will explore and implement many stylistic techniques within the structures of their essays that will assist them later in finding their voice within their own written words. They will learn how to use composition checklists to ensure that they have done a solid job editing their work. This class is high paced with the emphasis on EDITING – TRULY EDITING using their COMPOSITION CHECKLIST. The goal is for the student to understand that writing takes TIME and cannot be done in one or two sittings. It is expected that the students work a minimum of 45 minutes per day on their assignment; a minimum 7 – 8 hours over the course of two weeks to produce a well written paper.
NOTE: A good essay is NOT done in ONE or TWO sittings; instead it is created over time. When a student grows into a confident writer, less time will be needed for the process. This typically happens in the second year of this class. While working on homework, students are expected to repeat the writing process with some degree of independence. NEW (first year) students might need parental assistance, but, over time, ultimately, we are striving for them to establish independence as writers. In addition, after multiple years studying/using IEW methodology, it is often during the second year of this class that a student will begin “finding their voice” and given freedom to use stylistic techniques as they feel needed.
Students should expect approximately three hours of homework weekly.
Students are expected to post their homework to CANVAS for an evaluation.
NOTE: Registration deadline is September 15, 2021.
There must be a minimum of 5 students to run this class.
Ms. Eva is truly a wonderful teacher. This class has expanded both of my son and daughters writing minds. Having a dyslexic child can create a writing roadblock but with Ms. Eva’s gentle guidance and passion for teaching our child has grown leaps and bounds. Also having the opportunity for taking this as a flex class gives my children a chance to write at their own speed. This class as been a true blessing!
A blessing to our family!
Open Tent Academy has been such a blessing to my family!
My 9th grader enrolled in a year-long Writing course, All About Essays, this year with Ms. Eva and has thoroughly enjoyed the class. His writing has improved ten-fold! We couldn’t be more pleased.
This spring, his sisters have joined him, taking Starting IEW From the Very Beginning and Profiles of History. Both girls love their classes and look forward to each week.
All three of my children have learned so much!
Thank you, OTA!
Much more than just a business - you've changed my son's life and future!
If it wasn’t for Eva’s Writing Classes, which my son has taken for the last five years, J would, without a doubt, not be where he is today. The graduation speech as salutatorian that he wrote is a direct result of your teachings.
I thank God every time he tackles a paper. He uses every skill he has learned from your classes. Again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
I know it is a business you run, but it is much more than that. You have truly changed my son’s life and future.
Making the rules of writing so easy!
In middle and high school, I took IEW writing classes with Mrs. Goldstein. Her teaching style and passion for the material made learning the techniques and rules of writing so easy. Today, as I am preparing to graduate from George Mason University, I still apply what I learned from Mrs. Goldstein in every paper I write. I’m so thankful I took her classes many years ago, because it has truly helped me succeed in my current academics!
Responsive and Meaningful
Eva is a very experienced teacher who does not just ‘grade papers’ writing papers but gives meaningful feedback that helps the student learn and improve. She is very responsive by email. The learning management system used by OTA (called CANVAS) is very user friendly and easy to navigate. Eva is kind, reasonable, and has the students’ best interest at heart.
Please – do not miss out on Eva Goldstein-Meola’s IEW Writing classes – you will regret it!
