It is imperative that students, with the goal of attending college, can write basic essays with ease, speed, and confidence. In this class, your child will become well-versed in the structure and application of expository, persuasive, compare/contrast, research, and personal essays, which are found on most applications and scholarship forms for college, competitive summer programs and high school admission. Students will explore and implement many stylistic techniques within the structures of their essays that will assist them later in finding their voice within their own written words. They will learn how to use composition checklists to ensure that they have done a solid job editing their work. This class is high paced with the emphasis on EDITING – TRULY EDITING using their COMPOSITION CHECKLIST.
The goal is for the student to understand that writing takes TIME and cannot be done in one or two sittings. It is expected that the students work a minimum of 45 minutes per day on their assignment; a minimum 7 – 8 hours over the course of two weeks to produce a well written paper.
While working on homework, students are expected to repeat the writing process with some degree of independence. NEW (first year) students might need parental assistance, but, over time, ultimately, we are striving for them to establish independence as writers.
In addition, after multiple years studying/using IEW methodology, it is often during the second year of this class that a student will begin “finding their voice” and given freedom to use stylistic techniques as they feel needed.
Students are expected to be present in class, with class notes in front of them, participating actively and asking questions when they arise.
Students are expected to USE their CLASS NOTES (provided by instructor) while writing.
Students are expected to USE their ASSIGNMENT PLANNERS while writing.
Students are expected to USE their COMPOSITION CHECKLIST while editing.
All About Essays is an interactive, fast paced class.
If the student participates in class and does their homework to the best of their ability using the tools provided, it is expected that by the end of the year in All About Essays, students should feel comfortable writing a 5-paragraph essay. Often, students repeat this class twice. The second year ensures that students can write 5-paragraph essays comfortably, so that they are prepared for college level writing.
High School Students can take .5 (1/2) credit of English.
NOTE: This class must reach the minimum of ten students by August 10th to run. If we do not reach this minimum, parents will be notified by email.
Eva is amazing!
My daughter has taken two of Ms. Eva’s IEW writing classes and LOVES them. Ms. Eva’s class structure and teaching style truly makes the process manageable, even for the most reluctant writers. Class notes are provided so that the student can focus on the class content itself. The notes can be reviewed, along with the PowerPoint presentation, before and after class so that the material is familiar. And, as with all the OTA courses, the class is recorded and can be re-watched as many times as needed. Ms. Eva provides constructive feedback in a manner that encourages continuous improvement.
Thank you, Eva!
“During the process, they might not like me; however, I know when they arrive in college they will thank me.” (Eva Goldstein-Meola)
This is one thing that makes you a good teacher and the reason that I will ALWAYS enroll my upper elementary/middle/high school students in a writing class taught by someone else!
Students need someone that is hard on them that is not also tucking them in at night! I appreciate your rigorous grading and emphasis on learning and progress. I keep telling my boys… if you were getting 100%, I would need to sign you up for the class. Thank you for pouring your heart and soul into every lesson, Eva.
My kids love Eva!
My son was a very reluctant writer when he started taking classes with Ms. Eva, the founder of Open Tent Academy. Fast-forward three years and I have a teenager who writes willingly and thoughtfully. He found the IEW Writing classes that he took through Open Tent to be very well organized. He benefitted from the class structure, as well as the use of the online learning management system. It was easy to find everything that he needed for his assignments, and he liked that he could go back and re-watch his class if he missed it or if he had questions. I highly recommend Ms. Eva and the Open Tent Academy for online classes.
Ms. Eva was recommended to me when I was looking for an outside writing instructor for my kids after struggling with doing it myself. Her leveled IEW classes were a perfect fit for both of my children at the time.
The classes met my kids where they were in their educational journey. The skills that she taught them go far beyond just writing. She taught them how to read critically and extrapolate the important points of a passage.
After my son returned to public school, he had a fellow student in his science class ask how he was able to so easily prepare a one page outline of a passage in the textbook they were reading – it was the skills he learned with Ms. Eva and IEW that equipped him. I recommend Open Tent Academy to anyone looking for online solutions for homeschooling!
Wish I started OTA earlier!
I hesitated long and hard about Open Tent Academy and my only regret is not trying it sooner. Both of my kiddoes are taking math and writing classes. These classes are truly a gift. Ms. Eva’s IEW Writing Classes and literature are out of this world. Eva might be a tough writing teacher; however, she is fair and loves the children and her work. Jonathan’s United States History classes are amazing! I couldn’t be more pleased with OTA and plan on having my children take classes for years to come!
