Across the globe, people have asked questions such as:
- Where/How did the world begin?
- Who are we?
- What is our purpose is in life?
These questions, when viewed through the prism of different religious traditions, have a variety of answers. Throughout human history, religion has played a role in history, literature and current events. Without a basic understanding of various religious traditions, students often can’t relate to what they read in fiction and non-fiction texts. In this survey class, we will explore some of the major faiths practiced by people worldwide. For each one studied, we will learn about:
- Sacred objects
- Festivals
- Traditions
- Sacred places
- Rites of passage.
We will discuss in class a variety of religions and cultural connections. The class is highly interactive. Students are expected to participate.
Students should expect about one hour of homework. Students are expected to complete any readings assigned prior to class. They should be ready to discuss. In addition, there will be a few papers and/or projects for the student to complete.
NOTE: Registration deadline is March 1, 2022.
There must be a minimum of FIVE students to run this class.

Learning to love the past
History. This was definitely not my strongest area as a homeschool mother. I knew to provide my kids with what they needed, I had to look at outside resources. Taking a leap of faith, I registered both my 7th and 8th grader for U.S. History with Jonathan Meola.
Learning history through simple short stories using. “A History of US,” has been fun to read-a-loud. With a subject I once disliked myself, I’ve been able to power through, and engage with my children learning to love the past. Mr. Meola is a phenomenally fair instructor, and has allowed our kids to use their creativity for the semester project. The kids have enjoyed this area most about the class. Seeing their creations from the past come to life is a gift in itself. Thank you, Jonathan! You have lit a fire for history within my children!
Thanks for making homeschooling so much easier for us parents
We have absolutely loved Jonathan’s Ancient Civilizations class this year.
He is so organized, and his classes are expertly taught – my son usually makes me leave the room but I will often go back and listen to the recordings and watch some of the videos because they are so interesting.
We are thrilled that OTA is now a vendor with our charter school, and since Z will be in middle school next year, we plan on signing up for a lot more classes.
Keep up the excellent job and thanks for making homeschooling so much easier for us parents!
She Loved it!
My daughter thoroughly enjoys Mr. Jonathon and was super excited to take another class with him. She learned an immense amount from this class. In fact, she loved it so much that she asked to finish out the class even though she went to a semester boarding school! Me.Jonathon worked with her as she switched school situations and helped her complete the class.
Interesting and fun!
Interesting topics, fun experiments, and Mr. Meola’s knowledge of the content was evident!
Thorough Course
This course is a thorough tour of the globe highlighting the themes of geography and making them stick! Two of my children have now completed this course. Three years later, the first child continues to cite and integrate content acquired from this course. Course work was as described. Another excellent leaning experience with OTA and Mr. Meola.
