Throughout this fun, interactive 4-day summer camp, students will learn to create their own comic strip inspired by Dav Pilkey’s new book: Cat Kid Comic Club. Does your child have a fear of writing or worried he will will mess up? Join us as Cat Kid helps us to overcome our fears. Through humor and fun, Cat Kid teaches the tadpoles how to write a story. Cat Kid teaches that before you succeed at anything, you have to fail well.

Each day, we will look at a part of the book as we discuss and learn more about characters, the setting, and the beginning, middle, and ending of a story. We will have fun discussions and play games as we share our thoughts, ideas, and lots of giggles. Students will practice drawing a couple characters for fun and then decide what characters they will use for their stories using their own drawings, pictures cut out of magazines, or photographs. We will brainstorm ideas and each child will create their own comic strip throughout the week. They will learn to add in speech bubbles and narration boxes to tell their story.   During the last class, students will be encouraged to share their completed comic strip with the class.

This class is designed for children with a range of writing skills. Depending on each child’s level, he/she may only be drawing, writing letters, words, and/or sentences. The goal of this class is to let students’ imaginations soar as they explore storytelling through comics.

Templates will be provided to print out before and use during class, or students can create their own comics on paper or in a notebook. They may need a ruler if using plain paper. They will need pencils, erasers, colored pencils, and a folder to keep papers in. They will be encouraged to outline their finished product with a sharpie or pen. (Optional: Day 2 – Students will be encouraged to explore other ways to create characters using magazines or photographs. They would then need scissors and a glue stick as well.)

Most of the work will completed during class, but they may need extra time to work on their comic before the last class. We will add details during the last class before we share.

This camp runs from Monday, July 12 through Thursday, July 15 – daily – from 10:00 am – 11:00 am ET.

NOTE:

Registration deadline is July 5, 2021.

I wanted to thank you for everything you did for L this semester. Your class has really allowed him to blossom, and I admire how you had so many different levels and personalities but yet you were able to meet each child where they were, capture their attention, and help them grow. You are an amazing teacher, and although L is sad he won’t see you until September he can’t wait to get back in class with you then.

My daughter is getting close to being a reader, but has a few obstacles to get there. This class is definitely helping! She’s getting more confident and learning different skills that she can’t wait to use.
