Over the course of time, there have been three female, African American poets who had the distinct pleasure of reading at presidential inaugurations.

In 2021, Amanda Gorman read “The Hill We Climb” at Joe Biden’s inauguration.

In 2009, Elizabeth Alexander read “Praise Song for the Day” at Barack Obama’s inaguration.

In 1983, Maya Angelou read “On the Pulse of Morning” at Bill Clinton’s inauguration.

In this class, we will learn more about these three women, their lives and their poetry/writing in addition to reading and analyzing the poems!  We will spend two classes focusing on each poet.

NOTE: Registration deadline is April 30, 2021.

There must be a minimum of FIVE students to run this class.
