Wednesday, August 31 2022 @ 1:00PM – Wednesday, December 7 2022 @ 2:30PM EDT

Grade/Level:8th – 10th
Day of Week:Wednesday
Class Times:1:00PM – 2:30PM (ET)
Philosophy means “the love of wisdom,” and the questions philosophers ask are some of the most fundamental questions of life. Studying philosophy helps students expand their worldview, form their own moral codes, and develop their critical thinking skills. One great way for students to delve into these ideas and concepts is through the lens of a favorite work of literture.
This will be a discussion based class looking at a different topic in philosophy each week. We will first discuss a question or idea in general, and then, apply what we’ve discussed to the world of Harry Potter. Students should have already read the novels and should come to class prepared to share their views in a lively conversation just like Hermione Granger would!
Students will be provided with a resource booklet of quotations that we will use during this course.
Students will be required to participate in class discussions, and to do all assignments in a timely manner.
Students will receive approximately one to two hours per week. Assignments will include short writing assignments in response to our discussions.
Please note that I am also teaching a class called “Philosophy and Fantasy: The Hobbit and Ender’s Game” in the winter term on Open Tent Academy if you are interested in 20 weeks on these topics. Each course stands on its own, so you can take either one alone, or both.
NOTE: Registration deadline is August 15, 2022.
There must be a minimum of 5 students to run this class.
