Playing games teaches us so much!
Social skills such as diplomacy, patience, and the art of conversation are built along with skills of logic, planning, creativity, and strategy building. Each week Ms. Rachel will start students with a guided ice breaker in order to help build a sense of community. Then students will practice leadership and community skills as they play a variety of “table” games including, but not limited to Solo (like Uno), Carcossone, Haiclue, King of Tokyo, and many others. Weekly games will be chosen by group consensus. Students will be gifted a one month Premium account on Board Game Arena (an online gaming site); after the first month they may choose to continue ($2.50-$5/month) or convert to a free account.
This club may be credited as an extracurricular on high school transcripts. Possibilities for leadership roles available.
Ms. Rachel likes to provide students with the tools and opportunities they need to be brave and try things on their own in a safe environment. Playing games is great for the brain and should be fun! She is happy to work with students on molehills before they turn into mountains. Although Ms. Rachel will be available to help with facilitating game play, she usually does not participate as a player. She hopes to see students become confident in their gaming and communication skills and make this club something of which they will be proud.
Goals:
NOTE: This class must reach the minimum of five students by August 20th to run. If we do not reach this minimum, parents will be notified via email.
great teacher loved her skils and pep
Rachel Bevins is such a lovely teacher, making sure her students feel supported and encouraged during the language-learning process. I’m amazed by her patience every time I listen to part of her lesson, as she is one of those gifted teachers who can keep teens on track while also allowing them to feel validated with the things they want to express.
My daughter (and I) appreciated her grading policies. This was our first high school year, so having study groups outside of normal class hours was new to us, so just plan for your child to be online for those 1-2x per week as well. For my daughter, this was a great time to connect with her classmates and also to make sure she felt on track with what she was learning. It also built in some structure for her to stay on top of homework assignments.
We look forward to Spanish II next year, and would highly recommend this class.
Mrs. Bevins is a wonderful teacher who keeps students interested through interactive live classes and innovative assignments. Both of my daughters took Spanish 2 and had a great year! The work load is very reasonable but rigorous enough, and engages the student in different ways to solidify learning. Students have plenty of practice with listening, speaking, and writing the language. Grading happens in a timely manner and feedback is plentiful. I highly recommend this engaging class!
