Getting to Know Ratios, Rates & Proportions
$ 250.00
14 available

In this class, leaners develop an understanding of ratios, rates, and proportions. They learn what a ratio is and types of ratios, how to use ratio language, and ways to find equivalent ratios. Ratio tables are introduced as tools for solving real-world problems. Learners also develop an understanding of rates as a ratio that compares two different things, along with unit rates and how to utilize these to problem-solve when a multiplicative relationship is involved. Finally, proportional reasoning is investigated through stretching and shrinking geometric shapes, and through real-world applications, such as percentages.

During class, the instructor reviews previous concepts and introduces a new concept during each class. She uses a real-world problem to introduce each new concept. Learners are asked to solve each problem using their own reasoning and thinking, and to share in class. The instructor builds on the students’ thinking as she introduces new math vocabulary and provides relevant explanations, as well as sharing possible procedures/strategies to use when working with each new concept. Together the class explores additional examples involving the concept. Finally, problem sets are assigned for learners to complete by Monday at 8 PM of the next week.

The goal is for students to get to know the math vocabulary around ratios, rates, and proportions, as well as develop a conceptual understanding of what these mean and how to compute solutions to problems involving these multiplicative relationships.

There will be short assessments given at the beginning of certain class sessions to gauge students’ understanding of the previously taught concepts. These assessments include (1) asking students to solve one or several problems and share their answers via a survey tool in our online platform, (2) work together in a breakout room with one or two other students to solve a problem or set of problems, or (3) act as the teacher to correct pretend student work to identify the mistake and share an explanation of how to solve it correctly.

Grades for this class are Meeting Expectations, Exceeding Expectations,  Not Yet Met Expectations.

Meeting Expectations is earned for participating in class each week, putting forth effort in homework, and passing all assessments.

Exceeding Expectations is earned by putting in exceptional effort on homework, excelling on all assessments and by demonstrating an advanced understanding of operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

If parents would like a traditional letter grade, please let Mrs. Young know before the third week of the semester.

Given this class only meets twice per week, the expectation is that students spend at least an hour outside of class devoted to homework for the week.

If parents would like a traditional letter grade, please let Mrs. Young know before the third week of the semester.
