Hogwarts at Home: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - Winter 2022
$ 250.00
14 available

In this course, students will be immersed in the magical world of wizards and wands, as they read J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The Daily Prophet reports that “because of the recent health events which have transpired in Muggle society, Professor Dumbledore has instructed all first-year Hogwarts students to receive their instruction at home.” Each class will begin with a teacher-led read aloud from that week’s reading assignment. Students will be given the option of practicing the important skill of reading aloud as well. We will learn together through the use of engaging literature, class discussion, comprehension activities, and videos. Learning and documenting new vocabulary words will be a focus of this course, as will literary analysis. Prior to the beginning of the course, families may opt to receive a Hogwarts Acceptance Letter via the Muggle postal service. Wands at the ready, magical new adventures await!

Hogwarts robes are not required for class attendance but are strongly encouraged. I recommend the Rubie’s brand, available on Amazon. Wands will be used during classes; these can be homemade or purchased online. My personal choice for wands is The Nobel Collection, available on Amazon; these wands are sturdy and come in packaging like Mr. Ollivander himself would have used. Students are asked to keep their course materials in a three-ring binder. Basic art supplies such as markers, colored pencils, glue, and blank paper will be useful. Parents may be asked to print handouts ahead of time, to be used during classes. Students will be asked to watch the movie version of the text after class seven; it is rated PG and parents will need to rent, borrow, or purchase the movie for at-home viewing.

Students will be responsible for reading three chapters outside of class each week. Students may read from the text or listen to an audio recording. Brief comprehension and vocabulary quizzes will be given each week; these will be taken through CANVAS. Students will complete a final project, to be presented during week nine of the course.

NOTE:

Registration deadline is December 15, 2021.

There must be a minimum of 5 students to run this class.

My daughter has recently gone on a Harry Potter kick. She loves all things Harry Potter and looked forward to this class all week. She came to class in costume and got to talk with other kids about one of her favorite topics. Great class and highly recommended!

Magical Class!

This was our first class at OTA and it was a wonderful experience. As a parent, I found the class description very enticing and felt pretty confident that my (almost) 9 year old daughter would enjoy it. I couldn’t even finish reading the class description to her before she excitedly shouted, “YES! I WANT TO TAKE THAT CLASS!”
Ms. Robbins made the class engaging and fun from the beginning–starting with the arrival of an acceptance letter to Hogwarts! My daughter loved dressing up in her robe, getting ready for class,and enjoyed the classwork. As a traditional homeschooling family, my daughter also enjoyed the company of other students. Ella’s favorite part of class was the read alouds when Ms. Robbins would read using “voices” for different characters…”Not every teacher does that Mom, that’s cool,” my daughter said. We would highly recommend this class as it’s a great way to make learning fun and engaging. If you have a Harry Potter fan, don’t miss out on this class!
