Full Year 2023-2024
This is an interactive, introductory class geared towards middle and upper elementary level students. In this class, students will focus on brainstorming, note taking and writing both fiction and nonfiction pieces. Writing structures will include summarizing nonfiction, narrative summaries, beginning story writing using narrative summaries, beginning report writing, writing from pictures, and beginning essay writing. Simultaneously, students will also learn how to implement various stylistic techniques to increase description, as well as remove “banned words” (overused, boring words) from their writing.
Each week, Eva will review past lessons to encourage mastery. Parents are encouraged to actively participate in the homework process. Scribing for your child is acceptable (however, don’t change their words!).
Students are expected to work on homework for approximately 30 minutes daily over the course of the two weeks.
Students are encouraged to repeat this class twice. The first year tends to be overwhelming, and in most cases the second year is when their internal “light bulbs switch on” and writing happens! Once this course is completed, students will be ready for Powerful Paragraphs.
Please note this section is a larger class; however, Jonathan Meola offers a small group option.
NOTE: This class must reach the minimum of ten students by August 10, 2023 to run. If we do not reach this minimum, parents will be notified via email.
Fabulous Class!
I just wanted you to know that Laura and I were discussing classes for next year. I was thinking that she would “take a break” from Eva Goldstein-Meola’s writing class for one year and then return for the high school classes; however, Laura insisted, “Absolutely not. I learn so much from Eva. Not only about writing; but about how to be a better person. Eva expects excellence out of us in all areas of life.“
Laura truly enjoys all that you bring to the class, your energy, humor, and all that you teach. She has learned so very much from you and I know you have her highest respect along with mine. Personally, I am a terrible writer. Laura loves to write; however, that was not always the case. Without your instruction, I cannot even imagine the quality of her work. I thank you so much for everything. I am so glad I met you years ago in NJ at ENOCH. You have changed my daughter’s life for the better!
Fabulous Class!
Ms. Eva was recommended to me when I was looking for an outside writing instructor for my kids after struggling with doing it myself. Her leveled IEW classes were a perfect fit for both of my children at the time.
The classes met my kids where they were in their educational journey. The skills that she taught them go far beyond just writing. She taught them how to read critically and extrapolate the important points of a passage.
After my son returned to public school, he had a fellow student in his science class ask how he was able to so easily prepare a one page outline of a passage in the textbook they were reading – it was the skills he learned with Ms. Eva and IEW that equipped him. I recommend Open Tent Academy to anyone looking for online solutions for homeschooling!
Writing Classes Rock!
Middle School Writing has been a blessing along with the previous writing courses our children have taken! Each class, Intro to IEW, Powerful Paragraphs, Perspectives, and now Middle School Writing are all a step-by-step process to help kids learn Language Arts through writing.
I need to admit, at first, I was skeptic!
My son (now in his 8th Grade year) was lost after trying another IEW class in the 5th grade; however, after speaking to Eva Goldstein-Meola at length, I tried to give it one more try!
Mrs. Eva has worked with both of our kids for the past three years and I am AMAZED at how they have developed their writing skills.
Additionally, I’m truly thankful, as their writing skills has overflowed into every course and email they write.
Although, sometimes time consuming, but if you follow her plan (30 min a day), and stick to the program…your kids too will become an amazing writers.
Wish I started OTA earlier!
I hesitated long and hard about Open Tent Academy and my only regret is not trying it sooner. Both of my kiddoes are taking math and writing classes. These classes are truly a gift. Ms. Eva’s IEW Writing Classes and literature are out of this world. Eva might be a tough writing teacher; however, she is fair and loves the children and her work. Jonathan’s United States History classes are amazing! I couldn’t be more pleased with OTA and plan on having my children take classes for years to come!
