Utilizing the textbook Literature & Composition (2nd Edition) (Jago, et al., 2017) as a pathway, the teacher will guide mature (time management and content) readers through five units based on theme (ex. identity and culture, tradition, and progress) to promote critical thinking through reading, discussion, and writing.

Readers will be challenged by the readings (length, depth, diction, context). They will be supported by the teacher and their classmates (Zoom discussions and Canvas discussion boards) as they unpack the literary and rhetorical devices chosen by the author. When a student reads closely, their observation of the simple details evokes larger ideas tied to selves, communities, and the world! Essay writing (planning, drafting, peer editing, final versions) will focus on several types of essays (close analysis, interpretative, compare and contrast, persuasive) using rubrics for guidance with the focus on developing thesis statements, identifying supporting details, and determining the author’s purpose. The repeated practice of composing is transferrable to workplace and higher learning settings. Students will simultaneously read full-length works selected by the teacher or selected by the student from a teacher approved list.

These titles will be discussed in a modern book club format allowing students to read for pleasure while making connections to current events and social issues. Small projects will showcase the student’s imagination by tying the book club and textbook readings to real world content that is important to the youth.

This course will build an engaging and positive community of readers who learn from one another by sharing responses to literature. Live class on Thursday will focus on processing the readings from the week prior. Active participation in class discussions and related discussion boards are critical.  Reading and writing outside of class are imperative and will involve the student pacing themselves while balancing their other academic pursuits.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to create connections between classic literature and the world today.  Students will be able to defend thesis statements formulated by themselves related to aspects of literature.  Students will be able to critically and creatively evaluate the author’s purpose of the many forms of text that flood their everyday world.

NOTE: This class must reach the minimum of five students by August 20th to run. If we do not reach this minimum, parents will be notified via email.
