Literature: The One and Only Ivan – Grades 4 – 7 – Fall 2021 – 10 weeks

This unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendship. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated book is told from the point of view of Ivan himself. We will learn together through the use of engaging literature, class discussion, comprehension activities and videos. Learning new vocabulary words will be a focus of this course, as will literary analysis.

The class will be a combination of reading comprehension, journal writing (reflection), discussion, lecture and projects.

Students can expect approximately 2 hours weekly. This will consist of reading and responding to informal writing prompts, researching and possible quizzes.

NOTE:

Registration deadline is September 15, 2021.

There must be a minimum of 5 students to run this class.
