Open Art Studio – Fall 2023

Students will have the opportunity to experience a Choice-Based Art Studio. Choice Art, also referred to as TAB, (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) is an art making philosophy that empowers young artists to design and make their artwork completely individualized from beginning to end. It is a way to foster personal self-expression and express oneself through art materials that speak personally to the creator. This program provides a platform to build confidence, dedication, and self-expression.

Students will be mentored to help them envision, develop, and create their own artistic vision. The class will start with a sketchbook prompt. Afterwards class will continue by observing and commenting on the work of professional artists that coincide with the students’ work being created. Learning about other professional artists provides students with a springboard of inspiration to facilitate their own art-making process. The class will also feature different art-making techniques, catered to what the students are interested in. Open Studio time will be used for check-ins with students to see how their project is progressing, in addition to exchange feedback and personal guidance. It will be an optimal time for students to develop an art making practice and have in-progress art shares with their peers. Choice Art Studio enables students to develop their own artistic voice through mentorship and support from their peers.

“You want to be free with your art, because you want to make it your own art.  When someone looks at my art, they can see that I made it. You put all your heart, passion, and effort into something that you really enjoyed.”

 ~ 5th Grade Previous Student

“It means fun, responsibility, more decisions, and free choice. It teaches us to be more artistic and it expands our brains, as we have more to think about when it comes to creating.”

 ~ 6th Grade Previous Student

What does an Open Art Studio look like?

  • Sketchbook Challenge
    • Class will start with a drawing prompt, based on a specific theme/ concept
  • Art Inspiration
    • Then the teacher will share artwork of a well-known/ current artist, which highlights a specific medium technique. There will be a mini dialogue and artistic critique about the artwork
  • Open Studio
    • Open Studio will be most of the class, where the teacher will meet with students 1:1 to discuss their artistic vision.  Students will be guided on choosing what materials they would like to work with and what their theme is for their artistic creation. Each student’s project will be individualized to their creative visions and interests.
    • Depending on the student’s ability and needs, art themes and specific art teaching techniques can be provided to create more structure for the student to create.
  • Art Demo
    • A specific art technique will be taught each class, to expose students to different materials and provide inspiration of how they can manipulate different materials for their envisioned aesthetic.
  • Art Shares
    • Towards the end of class, students will share and check in with each other regarding how their art piece is developing. They will provide feedback to each other to create a studio culture of feedback and creative collaboration.

NOTE: This class must reach the minimum of five students by August 20th to run. If we do not reach the minimum, parents will be notified via email.

Sign Language!

Rated 5 out of 5

Miss Alli has been teaching my daughters on zoom, both art and sign language from across the globe! It is one of the highlights of both of their days and they cannot wait to get started each week. Miss Alli is an amazing, patient and kind teacher and can keep kids engaged for their sessions even over zoom. My kids are learning so much from her and I am so thankful that my children get to work with Miss Alli.

Miss Alli is one of a kind. She was able to tap into talents I never knew my children had. My kids looked forward to her classes and their creativity blossomed just by being around her! She is extremely talented.

Warmth, confidence, intuition, talent, and joy

Rated 5 out of 5

Miss Alli has the most magical way of leading her art classes! She embodies so much warmth, confidence, intuition, talent, and joy. Her many years of experience show when she walks around the room, engaging and guiding every student in creating their own unique masterpiece. She facilitates every style and personality, helping them express that which they never thought they could. Miss Alli doesn’t lead regular art classes, she touches souls through art and love. Being in Miss Alli’s classroom is a most wonderful experience that leaves all of her students feeling happier and more connected to themselves, those around them, and the world at large!

Advanced Art Techniques

Rated 5 out of 5

Miss Alli not only taught my children unique and advanced art techniques with such skill and patience but perhaps more importantly, she infused in them a love and curiosity surrounding what it means to be an artist. She wet their appetite so they could see themselves as lifelong learners of the craft. There’s nothing I could want more for my children than an educator who values their involvement in the process just as much as the end result. Miss Alli is a breath of fresh air in her unique ability to meet each kid where they are with palpable enthusiasm.”

Skillful and Imaginative

Rated 5 out of 5

Miss. Alli is wonderful! A skillful and imaginative artist herself, she has a lovely, calming energy and she sees the true artist hidden in each child. Children blossom under her instruction and encouragement, discovering the artistic style and form that speaks to them. All of my kids loved their time with Miss. Alli, from my oldest who is naturally drawn to art to my middle son whose previous refrain was always, “I hate art.” Ms. Alli helped my oldest daughter to try out new media, understand art as a means of self-expression, and clarify the narratives behind her artwork. And she got my skeptic son to engage and enjoy art for the first time!
