In literature, characters become our friends. We can sympathize or celebrate with them. We feel their joys, sorrows and pain. In this class, Perspectives, your child will embrace the world of Short Stories. We will delve deep into these pieces of literature analyzing, discussing and writing about the details pertaining to these stories. The writing will consist of three 5-paragraph Expository Essays and two Creative Writing assignments. Please refer to the syllabus for the list of short stories.
This semester we will be focusing on the following short stories:
- “The Ransom of Red Chief” by O.Henry
- “The Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan
- “Mother and Daughter” by Gary Soto
- “The Mustache” by Robert Cormier
- “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury
Ninth graders can take .5 (1/2) high school credit in English.
NOTE: Registration deadline is December 15, 2022.
There must be a minimum of 5 students to run this class.
Fabulous lit/comp class!
Perspectives was a last minute addition to my son’s 8th grade schedule, but it turned out to be the best decision of our homeschool year! The short stories were extremely effective in teaching literature and Eva’s instruction was excellent and thorough. It was a lot of work for my son, but the organization of the course and the way the assignments were distributed throughout the semester kept it very manageable.
Amazing Class!
This class is perfect for middle school students. The stories were engaging and interesting and the corresponding writing assignments help students learn to analyze literature. Eva does a wonderful job connecting with each student even through the virtual platform. My son appreciated that each class was recorded and he could always go back and watch it again for clarification. The class was organized and assignments were presented clearly. My son learned a lot from this challenging class. Great Job Eva!
Another Fabulous Class with Eva!
My daughter has taken several writing classes with Eva; however, this one – by far – has been her favorite. With that said, it was very important for her to have the foundation of INTRO TO WRITING, POWERFUL PARAGRAPH and MIDDLE SCHOOL WRITING to be as successful as she was in this class.
My daughter’s favorite part of this class was the creative writing component. This is something that Eva doesn’t teach in Middle School Writing.
I also appreciate Eva’s commitment to holding the kids accountable for their standard of work. Even through online learning, she is able to get to know the kids individually, making them feel valued in the classroom. This sparks their enthusiasm for class participation. Eva is amazing at what she does.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have turned J into a writer!
Great class. Even better teacher!
This was C’s first writing class with OTA and can’t wait to take more!
Eva is not only an amazing instructor: engaged, committed, caring and extremely knowledgeable, but she also went above and beyond in helping my son get caught up on how the IEW Writing process works. She spent additional time outside of class on Zoom making sure that he understood the writing process and felt comfortable with it.
Thank you for your time and dedication to your students!
Engaging class with fun assignments!
My son has taken several writing classes with Eva Goldstein – Meola. She has helped him build a solid foundation in writing. This class, Perspectives, was a natural succession and opportunity to apply what he had learned in writing and apply it to literature. Eva always kept my son gaged, which given the 6:00 am Pacific Coast start time, was not always an easy task.
My son greatly enjoyed the variety of assignments and I appreciated the added instruction of story elements and figurative language.
Thank you, Eva, for another wonderful experience!
