Spring 2022
In this six day course, students will face real-life scenarios and have the opportunity to make decisions about their hypothetical future.
Each child will choose a “random” career, (from choices), monthly income with and “student loan” payments based on their career. They will also choose where they want to live.
Then, each week, we will highlight a topic, exploring information and allowing them to make personal decisions about their “real life”. They will keep track of their budget, bills and expenses and see how they do at the end of the six days. Will they be able to cover everything with their monthly salary OR will they run out of money!
This is an opportunity for the students to gain a deeper understanding of how their parents live on a day-to-day basis as well as gives them a better understanding for decisions they will have to make in the not-too-distant future.
This is a REALITY CHECK for students.

Perfect “intro to life” for my rising high schooler!
My 9th grader is privileged to have two older siblings who are currently trying their hands at adulting, so he can passivley learn from their success… and failures, but he was ready for more. This is Life was perfect for him! Enough information to engage him where he was and take him to the next level. The course was well-planned and relevant, with a lot of interaction. We are so happy that we took a chance on Open Tent Academy. This first course did not disappoint.
This Is Life – this class should be mandatory!
I signed up my 8th grader to take this class because I wanted him to start thinking of his future. What I didn’t expect is him initiating meaningful discussions about our cost of living, inflation, budgeting, work-life balance, etc. My son will be attending a college-prep HS in the fall and had already told me he wasn’t “going to be an idiot who blows over $100 a month on lattes at the cafeteria.” I’m so thankful for this class! It really got my son thinking of his future.
Adulting is Hard!
I am so grateful to Ms Eva and Open Tent for providing a platform for kids to think about their futures. Last summer, my son F (then 12) took her Study Skills course which was so much more than study skills but planning skills and vision skills! This summer, he followed up with This Is Life. Now a teenager, nitty gritty details about handling finances, budgets, living arrangements are much more real to him. Thanks for introducing the future to him.
