West Side Story is the story of a “modern day Romeo and Juliet”. On the harsh streets of the Upper West Side, two gangs battle for control of the turf. The situation becomes complicated when a gang members falls in love with a rival’s sister.
This class will focus on the movie (1961 and 2020 versions) as well as the time it spent on Broadway. Students have an opportunity to study its journey to Broadway, plot, creative team, songs, composers, plot, trivia, etc.
We will analyze unique vocabulary, figurative language and literary analysis. We will do a comparison of West Side Story to Romeo and Juliet! And, Finally, we will look for hidden meanings in this musical phenomenon!
Please note: There are mature themes, profanity and a few references to sex used in the songs in this play. Although this is not going to be our focus, please be aware that they are in the lyrics.
