Do you have a Hamilton: An American Musical fan at home that is craving to know more? Lin-Manuel Maranda has successfully made American history relatable to a modern multi-age audience. For the first time, the American founding fathers and the people surrounding the American Revolution are not looked at as idols, but real humans, that lead real humanistic flawed lives. Hamilton: An American Musical, a revolutionary Broadway musical, opened in the summer of 2015, about 260 years after the real-life founding father on whose life it is based was born. The play was an immediate success breaking theater records and creating a buzz in the theater community and throughout the country unlike anything that had been seen in relationship to a musical. In this class, students will get a closer look at who were the real people behind the main characters of the Hamilton musical. We will take a deeper dive in history to find out what the musical got right, wrong, what was added, left out, and why.
We will analyze unique vocabulary, figurative language and literary analysis. We will use the lyrics from the 8 powerful songs to learn more about the historical figures and their motives! And finally, we will look for hidden meanings in this musical phenomenon!
Please note: There are mature themes, profanity and a few references to sex used in the songs in this play. Although this is not going to be our focus, please be aware that they are in the lyrics.
Homework is approximately two hours per week. Please join us for this powerful class.
Ninth graders can take .5 (1/2) credit in English, Drama or Elective.
NOTE: There must be a minimum of 5 students to run this class prior to December 15.
