Heather is a graduate of Western Michigan University where she received her B.S. in Elementary Education. She taught in the public schools for 8 years and currently holds a Masters in Education from Marygrove University. After working in the public school system, Heather decided to take some time off to raise her family.
She and her husband John have been married for twenty-four years, and have four children. Heather has had the privilege of homeschooling her children and watching them grow and find a purpose of their own. Her oldest John is at Western Michigan University studying Biochemistry, and her daughter Samantha is at Siena Heights University studying Exercise Science and playing volleyball. She has two more kids still at home; Josh and Sophia – who are twins and freshmen in High School.
Heather has homeschooled for 13 years and loves the time she has been given to be with her family. She has many years of experience with online teaching., and taught for 8 years at other online homeschool academies, where Heather loved working with her students and their parents. She has a passion for science and can’t wait to work with the students at Open Tent Academy.
When Heather isn’t with her family she enjoys being outdoors. The Getsons live on a small farm with chickens, goats, horses, and alpacas. She also loves to come in after a long day outside to work on her quilting.
This was a fun and interesting course for my daughter. Ms. Getson is a kind and sweet teacher with a homeschooling background which served our family well. Lots of hands-on assignments instead of boring book work. I would highly recommend this course!
Mrs. Geston is an excellent teacher. She gives clear and excellent lectures and fun projects. She is very kind and was understanding of the accommodations we had to make for the class due to our daughter’s special needs. We both learned a lot!
Organized, caring instructor!
My 10th grade son announced today that Mrs. Getson’s OTA Biology class has been his favorite class of the school year. Mrs. Getson starts class on time and is always prepared with an engaging PowerPoint presentation; we both sense her commitment to ensuring that the students understand the topics covered. He and I also appreciate Mrs. Getson’s clear expectations regarding homework. Homework assignments include a great mix of textbook reading, vocabulary work, and hands-on activities. My son’s favorite homework assignment this year was creating a detailed, 3D model of a caffeine molecule! We highly recommend this instructor!
This Biology class was above and beyond what I expected. S has learned so much.
